Waxing myth vs. fact

Who doesn’t love smooth skin? Waxing is an excellent option for achieving smooth skin with results that last much longer than shaving. If you don’t already get waxing done on a regular basis, you may have some questions. There are a number of misconceptions about the practice, so we’re here to clarify what’s myth vs. fact.

Myth: Hair must be long to wax

One myth is that in order to get a wax, you must let your hair grow long prior to your appointment.

Fact: Hair should be about 1/4 inch long

While hair that’s too short won’t be able to be waxed, hair does not have to be excessively long, either. Hair to be waxed should be about 1/4 inch long. If the hair is too short, the wax won’t be able to properly grip the hair. If the hair is too long, it can break without removing the root from the follicle.

Myth: Waxes cause saggy skin and wrinkles

Some people are hesitant to get a wax because they’ve heard that doing so can cause your skin to start sagging or cause wrinkles to form, especially on the face.

Fact: Getting a wax does not cause skin to wrinkle or sag

When it comes to sagging or wrinkled skin, aging is the culprit, not waxing. When you have a wax service performed, the wax pulls the hair, not your skin. In fact, when wax services are provided properly, your skin will be held taut.

Myth: Waxing will make hair grow back thicker

Have you ever considered getting a wax but decided against it due to fears of hair growing back thicker than before? This is a common myth, but it’s just that - a myth.

Fact: Getting a wax won’t cause thicker hair

The thickness of your body hair is determined mostly by genetics, and getting a wax will not cause hair to grow back thicker. In fact, you may notice less hair regrowth after multiple waxes. Repeated waxes can even potentially damage the hair follicle and cause hair to grow back finer than before.

Myth: It’s a bad idea to wax if you’re pregnant

Have you ever heard that you can’t get a wax if you’re pregnant? It’s yet another myth.

Fact: Typically, pregnancy doesn’t affect your ability to get a wax

It’s usually perfectly fine to get a wax when you’re pregnant. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that your hormones may cause your skin to be more sensitive, which can make the treatment feel slightly more painful. However, if that’s not a concern to you, then go for it!

Myth: Getting a wax will prevent ingrown hairs

Does waxing result in skin free of ingrown hairs forever?

Fact: A wax won’t totally resolve issues with ingrown hairs

Getting a wax can help prevent ingrown hairs, but it can’t guarantee that you’ll never have an ingrown hair ever again. Everyone is different and some people are simply more prone to getting ingrown hairs than other people. You can help prevent ingrown hairs from occurring by exfoliating your skin a few days after your service and on a regular basis.

When it comes to achieving smooth, hair-free skin, waxing is the way to go. While there are many myths about getting a wax, most are simply not true.
