Maybe your close friend raved about her waxing experience. Maybe you want to see what all the hype is about. Or maybe you’re just tired of shaving all the time.
No matter your reason for considering waxing for the first time, we hear you. And we’re here to help.
Coming in for a first-time wax can be an intimidating experience. Here we debunk four popularly-held myths and misconceptions about waxing, straight from the experts at our Russian Hill salon in San Francisco.
There isn’t a maximum length to keep in mind for your next appointment, but there is a minimum one. Your hair should be at least 1/4 of an inch long (about the size of a grain of rice) so the wax can properly grab it.
Otherwise, you may be left with patches of hair after your appointment.
It actually grows back thinner and softer — something you can see as soon as after your first appointment. After several waxes, the difference can be even more noticeable.
Because hair growth also differs slightly between follicles, your hair will also grow back in patches, which reduces the look of your hair regrowth even further.
You can! We’ll work with you to ensure that your appointment is as comfortable as possible.
If you’re on your period, just make sure to wear a tampon and secure the string beforehand. And in the latter case, know that it’s actually safe to wax at any stage of your pregnancy.
In both cases, you may be extra sensitive to pain so it may hurt more than usual.
Although you’re more likely to get ingrowns when you shave, waxing doesn’t completely get rid of the issue. Some people, like those with curly or thick hair, are just more likely to get them than others.
But you can help prevent them. Exfoliate the area regularly (both before and after your appointment) and try not to shave in between waxes to further reduce your chances of getting ingrowns.
When you exfoliate after your appointment, make sure to wait for a few days first until your skin has calmed down and healed. Otherwise, you can irritate your skin even further.
